Moraira - The Jewel of the Costa Blanca

Once a small fishing village nestling alongside its tiny castle, Moraira is now a stylish resort that has managed to stay close to its roots whilst catering for its cosmopolitan visitors.

Although the town has grown in recent years, becoming one of the most popular destinations on the Costa Blanca, it has done so by retaining all of its charm.

Part of its success lies in the town planners’ decision not to allow any building over five storeys. Low-rise town centre development and a scattering of white washed villas in the hillsides, mean that Moraira feels a long way from any bustling ‘bucket and spade’ resort. There are very few hotels, the town relies on villa trade for its economy and this gives the place a village feel.

The town centre and beaches are very clean and attractive and there is a small wildlife park situated just behind the main beach where many endangered species of flora and fauna can be found.

Moraira offers a huge variety of restaurants and bars to cater for every taste and budget. Whether you are looking for typical Spanish cuisine in Spanish surroundings or international cuisine like Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Italian or even just an English breakfast, then Moraira offers it all in style.

Amongst Moraira's restaurants and bars are many shops that stay open late into the evening selling ceramics, leather goods and other local trades. In the warm summer evenings there is a popular lively street market, perfect for finding gifts to take back home.

Local bakers, butchers and greengrocers can be found although there are some big supermarkets very close to the town.
The Friday market held opposite the town centre is an excellent opportunity to purchase all manner of fresh produce as well as leather goods, shoes, clothing and jewellery. For the adventurous a fresh fish market is held alongside the fisherman’s wharf every morning except Sunday.

Moraira has a quaint mixture of cobbled narrow alleys and modern avenues lined with palm trees and fountains with many benches for you to sit and watch the world go by or just stare at the beautiful Mediterranean.
Go-karting, golf, tennis as well as sailing from the town’s beautiful marina are all on offer plus a small fair that is always a hit with children late into the summer nights.

For the water sport fans Moraira offers an excellent array of sports to suit all, including jet ski hire, water skiing, deep sea fishing and diving tuition. For children there are specially designed park areas to play safely in and around the town.
Alternatively for a great day out visit Terra Mitica theme park, Aqualandia water park, Mundomar, Font D'Algar, Vergel Safari Park or even Valencia or Alicante for their shopping and culture.

All is beauty: sandy beaches and rocky coves… blues and greens of the Mediterranean Sea.

The beaches of Moraira really start form La Cala, a small rocky beach of clear waters and rather empty, due to the difficult access, either by sea or by walking along the cliff.

By boat, you can go around the Cape ("Cap d'Or") until you get to the beach Playa del Portet. It is a small inlet of shell form, rather quiet and of transparent waters, so becoming a superb setting for a peaceful swim. A large variety of restaurants and bars are available. From here you can climb up to the watch tower of Cap d'Or.

Within the town centre of Moraira, you can find the beach of L'Ampolla at the foot of the castle. With golden sand, it is the largest and most popular beach in the area, with an excellent range of facilities such as games, hammocks, washbasins for the feet, a watch tower and plenty of traditional restaurants.

Following the road towards Calpe, you will find the beaches of Platgetes, which are of easy access; they are half of golden sand and the other of rock. On the same road, before getting to Cap Blanc you will find the L'Andragó beach, a boulder beach, famous for being rather quiet. Parking area and restaurants are also available and it is one of the best areas for practising underwater sports.

The rest of the coastline up to Cap Blanc in an area full of cliffs with excellent viewpoints from which you can watch you can watch impressive scenes of clear blue and green waters.

All the beaches in Moraira have been awarded International Iso 9.001 certificates – for quality management- and Iso 14.001 –for environmental management-. Year after year, most beaches in Moraira receive the Blue Flag award, a symbol of the clean seas of Europe. Furthermore, the diversity of Moraira’s sea bottom has been granted a PIC award (Places of Community Interest).

Description: The three Wise Men land in the port and it is celebrated by a procession. Before that, a royal postman collects the letters of the children.

Carnivals

Description: Informal parade of “filaes” (group of people in fancy dress, mock battles between Moors and Christians)

Fiestas in Saint Peter's Street (Sant Pere)

Description: Street located in the seamen's quarter. Religious events, open air dancing evenings and animation.

Fiestas in la Pedrera Quarter
Date: June 28-29
Description: The streets of this quarter are decorated during this Fiesta to celebrate the procession in Saint Peter's honour, the open air dancing, greasy poles, etc. Sounds of "mascletaes" and "despertaes" (rockets fireworks) are also part of the fiesta.

Main Fiestas in Honour of the Holy Blood

Description: July brings us the festivities in honour of Our Lord’s Holy Blood, with floats, concerts, sports competitions, fireworks, “bous a la mar” (bulls to the sea), atradition declared of National Tourist Interest, etc.

Description: Fiestas in honour of Saint Agustin, celebrated during the nearest weekend to the Saint Agustin's day.
